Description
Medical visualization taken from human scanned data showing the vascular system of the kidney under 3 different magnifications. The image furthest to the left shows the blood vessels that consist within the kidney as whole. The image in the center shows a closer view of the arcuate arteries that exist towards the outer edge of the kidney. The image to the right shows a close-up of the tiny interlobular arteries, which are smaller branches of the arcuate arteries. The kidneys are densely packed with millions of tiny filtering units called nephrons, made up of winding tubules and microscopic blood vessels. Nephrons are the structural and functional units of the kidneys. Because the kidneys are packed with millions of capillaries, they are especially likely to be damaged by diabetes.
