New Yorkers burning seized stamped papers, from an illustration by A. B. Frost. The Stamp Act of 1765 was a tax imposed by the British Parliament on the colonies of British America. It was deplored and resisted by the Americans, whose rallying cry of "No Taxation without Representation" helped foment the American Revolution.
