Choanoflagellate (Choanomonada Craspedid, Salpingoeca sp.) From wet soil of the Northern Black Forest National Park (Adlerhorst). Chanomonads are single-celled organisms (heterotrophic protists), which mainly feed on bacteria. They were found very frequently in this wet soil sample. Choanoflagellates occur either as stationary or as free-floating individuals or colonies in marine and freshwater. They feed on organic particles, especially water-borne bacteria, which are catched by whipping them up to their collars with the movement of their flagellum (not visible in this picture). The particles are then picked up by pseudopodia at the base of the microvilli and digested.Scanning Electron Microscope, magnification 13 000 1 (at 15cm image width)
