Description

Human chromosomes. Artwork of human chromosomes, based on a light micrograph. These chromosomes are from a red blood cell of a normal female, captured in the metaphase stage of mitosis (cell division). Pink and blue coloring represents chromosomes of maternal and paternal origins. Chromosomes are thread-like structures in the cell nucleus that carry genetic information in the form of genes. Each is seen to consist of two strands (chromatids) joined in a region known as the centromere or kinetochore. Every chromosome is capable of constructing an exact copy of itself whilst the cell is in its resting stage between successive cell divisions.
