Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal structure of cuttlefish (Sepia sp.) bone, or internal shell. This is calcareous bone and is mostly composed of calcium carbonate. It has to be strong, to withstand the hydrostatic pressure it is put under, but also light, hence the air-filled spaces. Cuttlefish are cephalopods, related to squid and octopus. Magnification x140 when printed at 10 cm wide.
