Description

Desert Bighorn Rams (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) measure 6 feet in length and weigh 125 to 200 pounds. Their horns grow up to a length of 33 inches and weigh 30 pounds. Rams indulge in head-to-head combat during the breeding season, with the winner gaining possession of the ewes. The horns stop growing during the breeding season, producing a dense, dark growth ring that can be counted to determine a bighorn's age. Desert Bighorn Sheep range from California and Nevada to west Texas and south into Mexico. Lake Mead National Rec. Area, AZ.
