Artist's Description

Wood engraving by Thomas Nast of Abraham Lincoln and the hoped-for effects of Emancipation. Scenes of slave auctions and whippings (left) give way to happy prosperous black families (middle and right), at home or enjoying public institutions such as schools and banks. The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln declaring the freedom of all slaves in the Confederate States of America. It was established on January 1, 1863.
