Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of escherichia coli - a nonpathogenic strain present in the intestinal contents of many mammals including humans. Called 'intestinal rod'. Used as an indicator of feces present as a contaminant. One of E. coli strains (O157H7) (not shown) produces toxins and causes severe health problems. Escherichia coli, a normal bacterial inhabitant of the human intestine. Under certain conditions, the e. coli bacteria may become harmful and cause infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts.
