False-color satellite image of the Mediterranean Sea, showing the distribution of phytoplankton in the surface water. The colors represent varying phytoplankton densities from red (most dense) through orange, yellow and green to blue (least dense). Land areas are colored black. The Mediterranean is fairly barren compared with the plankton-rich waters of the Atlantic (left) and the Black Sea (upper right). The image was produced from data acquired by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner, one of the instrumanets on NASA's Nimbus-7 research satellite.
