Description
Particles of iron oxide 10 nanometers in size are suspended in a light oil to create ferrofluid. This fluid changes properties with a magnetic field. In this image the strange spike shapes are a balance between surface tension and the alignment of the fluid in an external magnetic field. Ferrofluids have many applications in industry such as electrical transmissions to sealing computer hard drives.
