Description
A simulated coastal fog desert in the Biosphere 2 complex. Biosphere 2 was an artificially closed ecosystem on a 3.14 acre plot in Oracle, Arizona. It was constructed between 1987 and 1991 by Space Biosphere Ventures. Biosphere 2 was used to study interrelationships within closed life systems, with potential applications toward space colonization. Most of the money for the project came from Decisions Investment, totaling $200 million. Between 1995 and 2003, Columbia University operated the facility for research. As of 2006, the enclosure was no longer kept airtight. The property was to be redeveloped, but the University of Arizona took over stewardship in 2007. They have been doing research there since.
