Artist's Description

"South Front of the Kremlin from the Old Bridge," a view of the Great Palace of the Kremlin across the Moscow River, taken by Roger Fenton (English, 1819-1869) in 1852. The octagonal bell tower of Ivan the Great rises just above and to the right. Fenton, who had taken up photography a few months earlier, traveled to Russia with an acquaintance who was constructing a bridge for Czar Nicholas I. This image is one of the earliest surviving photographs of Russia.
