Description
Luna Moth (Actias luna) Adult, female Luna hanging on a blooming Chinese Wisteria. Adult Luna Moths do not feed or nectar. The Luna Moth is a common member of the Saturniidae family that is found throughout eastern North America and is particularly abundant in the south where it is commonly seen around lights. Favored foodplants for the caterpillars are Sweetgums, all Hickory and Walnuts, Black Gum, Birch, Persimmon and others. In the southeastern USA Luna have 2 sometimes 3 broods each year. This specimen was found in situ on a Chinese Wisteria that was near a street light. South Carolina, spring.
