Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing metastasis of adenocarcinoma (green) in the lungs of a mouse. In the upper half of the picture the remnants of normal pulmonary tissue are seen; pneumocytes (yellow) and alveolar macrophages (whitish) are visible on the walls of the pulmonary vesicles. Erythrocytes (red) appear through the walls of the pulmonary capillaries. The cancer cells begin to migrate into and out of the lung tissue from below. Some cancers form substances for the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis), which ensures the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tumor. Such metastases grow particularly rapidly. Therefore, drugs that suppress angiogenesis have been developed (angiogenesis inhibitors). Magnification 12001 (at 15x12 cm image size).
