Artist's Description

Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a macrophage (large white blood cell) taking in Borrelia bacteria, which can cause Lyme disease. The fine spurs of the macrophage encircles the foreign object and drags it over to the cell. Macrophages eliminate "intruders" and dead or abnormal cells. They can leave the bloodstream and penetrate into tissue, where they completely change their (normally spherical) shape to control large areas. Magnification 2.400x (at 12x10 cm image size).
