Artist's Description

Maximilien Francois Marie Isidore Robespierre (May 6, 1758 - July 28, 1794) was a French lawyer and politician, and one of the most influential figures of the French Revolution. As a member of the Estates-General, the Constituent Assembly and the Jacobin Club, he advocated against the death penalty and for the abolition of slavery, while supporting equality of rights, universal suffrage and the establishment of a republic. He was an important figure during the period of the Revolution commonly known as the Reign of Terror, a 10 month period in which mass executions were carried out. People were guillotined for not supporting the French Revolution, hoarding, desertion, rebellion, and other things he saw as crimes. He guillotined entire families of aristocrats and ordinary people. Most were killed without trials. As many as 40,000 were either executed or died in prison including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.
