Description
Metal foam is as stable as solid metal, but weighs much less. It is are used in cars and airplanes to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Metal foam is produced by coating 3-5 mm styrofoam beads in liquid metal, welding them together, and heating the welded beads to a very high temperature (500 to 1200 degrees Celsius) so as to burn away the styrofoam, leaving just the metal. The final product is a pure metal structure that is mechanically very stable, but nevertheless lightweight. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM); 251 at 12x10 cm.
