Description
Close-up of a Moai artwork on Easter Island during Tapati Festival Rapa Nui. All of the Easter Island stone figures, called Moai, were carved on the sloped sides or within the crater of the extinct volcano called Rana Ruraku. Most are still lying on their backs where they were shaped with crude hand axes out of the volcanic tuff stone. Out of hundreds of carvings only one or two differ from the basic pattern of a stylized head and torso with identical facial features and a slight potbelly. Proportions varied slightly and heights differed from 23 to 55 feet at the dozen or so quarries, but it is as though a single artist carved them all.
