Artist's Description

Kanda kon'ya-cho. Dyers' quarter, Kanda. Mount Fuji is a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tokaido road. The mountain is mentioned in Japanese literature throughout the ages and is the subject of many poems. Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano located near the Pacific coast of Honshu and one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains". The ukiyo-e genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, view 75. Utagawa Hiroshige, 1857.
