Description
Kawasaki. Travelers being ferried across the Rokugo River where others wait on the opposite shore at the Kawasaki station on the Tokaido Road. Mount Fuji is a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tokaido road. The mountain is mentioned in Japanese literature throughout the ages and is the subject of many poems. Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano located near the Pacific coast of Honshu and one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains". The ukiyo-e genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. Utagawa Hiroshige, circa 1833-36.
