Description
Color enhanced scanning electron microscope image of a natural killer cell (NK cell) on a ependymoma cell (yellow). Ependymomas are usually referred to as slowly growing glial tumors derived from the ependymic cells of the internal brain chambers and the central canal in the spinal cord. Due to their position, ependymomas frequently block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which can lead to an increase in the brain pressure. This can lead to headaches, nausea, vomiting and hydrocephalus. NK cells are able to recognize and kill abnormal cells such as tumor cells and virus-infected cells. The NK Cell has already triggered apoptosis of the cancer cell which is shown at the blistering of the cell membrane (blebbing). Magnification is 5000x at 10 cm wide.
