Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a net-winged midge (Blephariceridae) larva, a family of Diptera belonging to Nematocera. Their larvae are well adapted to life in strong currents the body is very flat and wide; on the underside of the body are six consecutive suckers (dark gray), with which the larvae hold themselves in very strong currents by suctioning onto the stones. Microhairs on the edge of the suction cups increase the adhesion. The larvae graze with their pines (above the first sucker, yellowish) on the growth on stones, especially diatoms. Magnification is 45x at 12x12cm image size.especially diatoms. Magnification is 15x at 12x12cm image size.
