Description
Ni-o guardian, by Unkei Kaikei, Great South Gate, Todai-ji, Nara, Japan, 1203 A.D. According to the Mahayana tradition, the Ni-o Guardians are manifestations of the Bodhisattva Vajra-pani. In ancient times, they were the historical Buddha's personal bodyguards. Today, statues of the Nio Guardians can be found defending Buddhist temples from thieves and evil spirits.
