Description
Two color varieties of the Peppered Moth (Biston betularia) on the bark of a tree. This moth is a famous example of evolution. The light color variation serves to camouflage this moth against the lichen covered bark of trees. In the 1840s, England's industrial pollution turned trees a sooty black. The darker moth (occurring as a genetic mutation) was better camouflaged on the sooty trees and the light moth was seen and preyed upon by birds. Within 50 years the dark moth became the more common form.
