Description
Freezing breakage of a peripheral nerve. Individual nerve fibers (blue) are surrounded by myelin sheaths (pale blue). These are formed by the Schwann cells (light red, kernels darker). In between are reticulate fibers (connective tissue, gray), which provide mechanical stability. The bundle of nerves is surrounded by perineurial cells (yellow). On the bottom right, a nucleus of these cells can be seen (orange). Scanning electron micrograph. Magnification is 7000x at 15x12cm image size.
