Description
An elegiac poem, on the death of that celebrated divine, and eminent servant of Jesus Christ, the Reverend and learned George Whitefield. George Whitefield ( December 27, 1714 - September 30,1770) was an English Anglican cleric and one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. In 1740, during his second visit to America, he published an open letter to the planters of South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland chastising them for their cruelty to their slaves. He is remembered as one of the first to preach to slaves. Phillis Wheatley wrote a poem in his memory after he died, while she was still a slave. Published in 1770, (cropped).
