Description
The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD. The aqueduct was built to channel water from the springs of the Fontaine d'Eure to the castellum divisorum (repartition basin) in Nemausus. From there, it was distributed to fountains, baths and private homes around the city. The straight-line distance between the two is about 12 miles, but the aqueduct takes a winding route measuring around 31 miles. The Pont du Gard is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges, and one of the best preserved. UNESCO World Heritage Site, 1985. Edouard Baldus, 1861 (cropped and cleaned).
