Description
Wormwood (Artemisia absinthum) is a 1 to 4 foot tall aromatic perennial. Its extremely bitter leaves were nibbled by people to stimulate appetite. Wormwood tea has been used as a remedy for fever, liver and gall bladder ailments, delayed menses, and deworming. It was formerly used to flavor absinthe liqueurs (now banned in the U.S.). Wormwood contains thujone, a toxic terpene. It is permitted as a food additive (flavoring) provided that the thujone has been removed. Thujone may cause nervous disorders, convulsions, nightmares or insomnia. Wormwood pollen may induce allergies.
