Arthritis. Computer-enhanced colored X-ray of the hands of a 72-year-old woman suffering from arthritis. Affected joints of the fingers and wrists are highlighted in yellow. The red color signifies pain due to swelling and damage of the joints. Bone appears gray-blue. Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis are two main types of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder causing inflammation and joint destruction. Osteoarthritis is a painful disease of joint cartilage, associated with bone deformity and impairment of the affected joints. Osteoarthritis occurs most commonly in the elderly. It may result from joint overuse, and may be inherited.
