Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 - April 12, 1975) was an American dancer, singer, and actress. Fluent in both English and French, she became an international musical and political icon. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou, and to integrate an American concert hall. She became a citizen of France in 1937 and assisted the French Resistance during WWII and received the Croix de guerre. In 1975, she starred in a retrospective revue in Paris celebrating her 50 years in show business. Four days later, Baker was found lying peacefully in her bed surrounded by newspapers with glowing reviews of her performance. No photographer credited, undated (cropped and cleaned).
