Artist's Description

Second in a series of four color enhanced light micrographs showing a single-celled Amoeba sp. engulfing another protozoan, Paramecium sp. The amoeba has extended a pseudopodium (false foot) to attack its prey. The pseudopodium is formed from the flexible wall of the amoeba cell. The paramecium is being engulfed and will be digested within a cavity (vacuole) inside the amoeba cell. This form of feeding is known as phagocytosis. Magnification x43 at 35mm size. The full series includes images BM8580, BM8583, BM8586, and BM8589.
