Polarized light photomicrograph of a thin section of agate from Brazil. Agate is made of microcrystalline silica (SiO2), called chalcedony. This image illustrates the origin of agate hot, silica-rich solutions repeatedly deposit thin layers of chalcedony, often in radial patterns, that vary in shape, color, transparency and thickness. Sometimes linings of crystalline quartz may be present; other times 'dirty' solutions deposit black linings that help track the progressive growth of the rock. Polarized light, crossed polarizers and red tint plate. Thickness of section 30 microns. Zeiss Axioscop 40pol. Width of view 2.7 mm.
