Artist's Description
Altitude dial (regiomontanus type) and nocurlabe of Johannes Paulus Cimerlinus (1544 - 1585). Navigators calculated latitude and time at night with this instrument by sighting the North Star, Polaris, through the hole in the center and aligning it with markings on the perimiter. This particular instrument could also be used to tell time during the day.
