Description
Scanning electron micrograph of a mosquito (Anopheles gambiae) on human skin. Clearly visible are the antennae, proboscis, maxillary palps, and compound eyes. Only female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles can transmit malaria. They belong to the family of mosquitoes (Culicidae). The occurrence extends to the African sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The anthropophilic Anopheles females first find their hosts by CO2 concentrations in the air. However, they are also attracted to the smell of Brevibacterium epidermidis found on feet as well as Brevibacterium linens used in cheese rinds (i.e. limburger cheese). Magnification 38x at 15x12cm image size.
