A team from Dr. Sriram Subramaniam's lab at NCI's Center for Cancer Research used high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy to create this 2.2 angstrom resolution electrondensity map of beta-galactosidase. An essential enzyme in the human body, beta-galactosidase is commonly used in molecular biology as a marker to monitor the expression of genes. The map is colored by protein subunit. As of October 2015 it is the highest resolution structure determined by single-particle cryo-EM to date. Beta-galactosidase is an enzyme occurring in certain yeasts and in the intestinal juices of mammals, especially one that catalyzes the hydrolysis of lactose into glucose and galactose. Created by Veronica Falconieri, Sriram Subramaniam, 2015.
