Description
Color-enhanced Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterial agent of Lyme disease. Ticks are carriers of the bacterium and transmit the pathogen during the act of feeding on people. The initial symptom of the disease is migratory erythema (bullseye rash). Weeks later there may be inflammation of the meninges and spinal cord and rheumatoid-like joint pain. Treatment is by antibiotics; there is no vaccine and no lifelong immunity. Magnification is 50001, or 4200x when printed at 10 cm wide.
