Artist's Description

Reconstruction of the sponge, Vauxia gracilenta, from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia. This elegant sponge is the most common sponge in the Burgess Shale fauna, comprising more than half of all sponge fossils collected from the site. Though delicate in appearance, the skeleton of Vauxia gracilenta was composed of long fibers fused into a net. This resulted in a tough framework that may account for its being so commonly preserved as a fossil. The bush-like colonies are often more than 30 mm high.
