Description
Color enhanced 1858 illustration from "Haper's Weekly" showing the Americans at Sullivan's Island firing on the British fleet. On June 28, early in the American Revolutionary War, British warships attacked the fort later named after William Moultrie who commanded the regiment that successfully defended it. The palmetto log fort absorbed the shelling from the British. Fort Moultrie was eventually captured by the British in 1780.
