Captioned "An entire body of philosophy, according to the principles of the famous Renate Des Cartes in three books, written originally in Latin by the learned Anthony Le Grand; now carefully translated from the last corrections, alterations, and large additions of the author, never yet published; the whole work illustrated with almost an hundred sculptures designed, drawn and engraved historically by good artists, published 1699. The plates are variously signed by Kip, Gucht, Lens, and Freman." René Descartes (March 31, 1596 - February 11, 1650) was a French mathematician, philosopher and physiologist. Living on his modest inherited wealth, Descartes traveled, studied, wrote, and served as a soldier in Holland, Bohemia and Hungary. He created analytical geometry, which translates geometrical problems into algebraic form so that algebraic methods can be applied to their solution. Conversely he applied geometry to algebra.
