This dragonfish (Astronesthes oligoa), was collected in the Gulf of Mexico between 600 and 200 meters depth, 2016. This species has a distinctive light organ below each eye and rows of photophores running down its sides. The barbel has a lure at the end of it that glows in the dark and is used to attract prey items to within striking range of the dragonfish. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project.
