Description
Scanning electron micrograph of Greta morgane or glasswing (Greta oto) butterfly wing. The glasswing is a diurnal butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. The wing span is up to 6 cm, whereby the largest part of the wing is transparent. Only the edges and the wing veins are dark brown in color. Here is a transparent area of the wing with a few wing scales. The refractive structure produces a non-shiny, completely transparent appearance. The wings of this butterfly have a microstructure prevents reflection. Magnification 600x at 15x12cm image size.
