Artist's Description

The Great Fire of London, 1666. The catastrophe occurred during Gemini's month, represented here in a reverse and negative aspect. The Great Fire of London of September 1666 was one of the most famous incidents in Stuart England. It was the second tragedy to hit the city in the space of 12 months. The fire swept through the central parts of the English city of London, from September 2nd to September 5th, 1666. The fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman City Wall. Lilly caused much controversy in 1652 for allegedly predicting the Great Fire of London some 14 years before it happened. For this reason many people believed that he might have started the fire, but there is no evidence to support these claims. He was tried for the offence in Parliament but was found to be innocent.
