Description
Color enhanced scanning electron microscope of pollen from a Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), (also called sunroot, sunchoke, or topinambour). This is a species of sunflower, native to eastern North America. This kind of tuberous sunflower may be over 3m high. It blooms late in the fall with small sunflower-like blooms. The tubers in the ground are characteristic by their inulin contents (in contrast to starch present in potato tubers). Image width 122 micrometers. Magnification 820x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
