Steam and Ash eruption at Halemaumau, the summit crater of Kilauea Volcano on March 29, 2008. This mostly steam activity followed several days of intense ash eruptions. Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes and is often associated withe passive lava flows. But this shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has had a violent past. The ash seen here is issuing from a vent and is being generated by by water and molten rock interacting beneath the surface. The people and cars seen here are in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, at Steam Vents along The park's Crater Rim Drive.
