Description
Scanning electron micrograph of a mosquito, showing the wing edge with scales. Mosquitoes (Culicidae) are a family of insects within the order of the diptera. There are more than 3600 mosquito species worldwide, 104 occur in Europe - most of them already in Central Europe. Certain mosquitoes are medically relevant as carriers of infectious diseases such as malaria or dengue fever. The scales depicted probably serve to attenuate flight noise. Magnification 550x (at 15 cm image width).
