Description
Mount Fuji from the mountains of Totomi is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. The thirty-fourth print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Shows two men cutting lumber, a woman carrying an infant on her back is talking to a man sharpening a saw. Mount Fuji is a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tokaido road. Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains". The ukiyo-e genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries.
