Artist's Description

Two American Indians cooking over a fire; illustration by Theodor de Bry after John White, c. 1590. The pot contains a liquid mixture, with fish, ears of maize, and probably small fruit. Although de Bry never set foot in the New World himself, he made many copies of watercolors by other artists, often making them look more European. The engravings are some of the earliest, if not necessarily the most accurate, surviving records of the Native Americans of the period.
