Description
Color enhanced illustration of Rebecca Motte (1737-1815) a patriot in the American Revolution. The Motte family was one of the wealthiest in South Carolina at the time, owning many plantations. They supported the American Revolution by providing soldiers with beef, pork, corn, rice, and fodder. The Mt. Joseph property, later known as Fort Motte, was occupied and fortified by the British. When Marion and Lee were sent to capture Fort Motte, known as the Siege of Fort Motte, they decided to burn the home. Mrs. Motte did not hesitate to help even though it led to the destruction of her property.
