Description
Scanning electron micrograph of a mosquito (Anopheles gambiae) on human skin. Detailed view of the proboscis. Only female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles can transmit malaria. They belong to the family of mosquitoes (Culicidae). The occurrence extends to the African sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The anthropophilic Anopheles females first find their hosts by CO2 concentrations in the air. However, they are also attracted to the smell of Brevibacterium epidermidis found on feet as well as Brevibacterium linens used in cheese rinds (i.e. limburger cheese). Magnification 400x at 15x12cm image size.
