Description
Atlas moth eye. Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a compound eye from an atlas moth (Attacus atlas). The eye consists of many lenses (hexagonal) known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the moth's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification x3,300 when printed at 10 centimeters wide.
